Sam did her best to share everything she could about the events from the early morning, right down to the smells, sounds and annoying security guard. Both John and Tim listened intently, occasionally sipping their drinks as they did. When she finished, John stood and went to the television, looking out over the city as if it was real.
âThat son of a bitch has been eluding us for a long time. If I had to compare him to others, Iâd say heâs also been one of the hardest to catch. He just seems to be a step ahead of us at every turn.â
âNot next time,â Tim offered.
âMaybe so, but if Samâs drawing is correct, then he only needs one more to end his campaign. Thereâs only one spot left, isnât that right?â John looked back at Sam.
âAccording to that symbol, yes.â
âThereâs nothing else you can remember?â
âIâm sorry, no. I wasnât with the car for very long and that sheriff stood with me the entire time.â John nodded, looking almost wounded.
âI just wish we could save the final victim.â He walked back to the table and sat down. âTim, would you mind giving us a moment?â He nodded and stood, disappearing into the elevator a minute later. Once the doors had slid shut, John stood, reached for something in his pocket and pulled it out. He aimed it at the vacant wall behind Sam and as she turned to see what he was doing, the entire wall began to rise.
She stood in surprise as another room was revealed, this one appearing much more relaxed than the one she stood in.
âYou canât take money with you when you die, I say,â John said and began to walk into the new room. It was much larger than any others she had seen at the compound and although it took her a moment to realize, she was gobsmacked once she made the connection. The room was an exact replica of the one at the MW building, including the view via another huge television screen.
âIs this real?â was all Sam could think of, following John towards the couches. He stopped by a small bar, poured himself a glass of something, then held it out to Sam.
âBrandy?â She shook her head, still stunned by the accuracy of the room. Even the view looked exactly the same, a bright sunny day outside, just as it was the previous day when she sat in the real top-floor office.
âThis really is incredible,âSam offered as she sat. John nodded, sitting opposite her.
âUnlike Xavier, I grew up poor, so nice things tend to impress me. Itâs one of my weaknesses and not something I tend to feel like I need to apologize for. Like I said, you canât take it with you when everything ends. Why not put it to good use and make yourself happy?â
A sudden silence fell over the room as John sipped his drink, regarding Sam. But while he may have been looking at her, she didnât feel uncomfortable.
